About "The Hip Hop Nutcracker"

Last year UPCA collaborated with Decadancetheatrecompany and its choregrapher Jennifer Weber to create a new holiday show for the Northern Manhattan community and beyond.

The Hip Hop Nutcracker” featured Tchaikovsky's magical score, explosive hip hop dance, a DJ and electric violinist. The classic story was adapted and transplanted to contemporary Washington Heights by UPCA executive director Mike Fitelson.

It was a hit, delighting thousands of audience members of all ages during two shows at the United Palace and two at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark.

The press loved it. The New York Times described it as: "magical" with "touches of poetry" and "a gift to Upper Manhattan." Time Out New York called it “a classic rebooted.” CBS News said “The Hip Hop Nutcracker turns Tchaikovsky on his head in the coolest possible way.” (Read all the press about the show.)

This November it returns to the Palace for two shows before going on an 11-city tour, including . . . Miami . . . Atlanta . . . St. Paul . . . Charleston . . . Charlotte, and . . . believe it or not . . . Moscow, Russia!

Our friends at NJPAC are producing the show this year, but the Palace continues to be the home of “The Hip Hop Nutcracker.”

Tickets are $10-100. For group sales contact Mike Fitelson at 212-568-1157 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

We are also polishing the story and creating all new digital scenery to transform our holiday show into a new holiday tradition for families near and far.

There will be more news about the show in the coming weeks. Keep in touch by following UPCA and "The Hip Hop Nutcracker" on social media. Let's kick off the holiday season together.
